Event Data Recorders

Steve Thannhauser is the latest from Collision Analysis to obtain certification in downloading and interpreting event data recorders (EDRs), commonly known as “black boxes.” The course was held in Calgary May 10th to 14th.
Information that can be downloaded from an EDR varies considerably from vehicle to vehicle and not all vehicle manufacturers have provided the means with which to access the information. Select GM vehicles dating back to model year 1994 are accessible. Most late-model GM, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles are now supported, as well as a small number from other manufacturers. Common data that can be downloaded includes pre-crash speed, collision severity, brake status, and seatbelt usage.
It is crucial to corroborate EDR data with other crash evidence. EDR data should always be interpreted by someone who understands the particulars and limitations of these devices. Please contact us if you’re wondering if your file can benefit from an event data recorder analysis.
